- A Navy sailor and his wife suspected of child neglect are under investigation. The heavily redacted police reports on the incident indicate the couple didn't protect a child from abuse, and the child ended up with permanent disfigurement. The child's relationship to the couple was not released. Gregory Haywood, a sailor stationed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and his wife, Ingria Haywood, are each facing charges of child neglect and failure to protect and medical neglect. According to the police reports, the Haywoods failed to make a reasonable effort to protect the victim from abuse and neglect by another person. The neglect of the victim is based on repeated conduct that resulted in the victim obtaining great bodily harm, permanent disfigurement and permanent disability, police said. The report does not say who hurt the victim or where the abuse took place but indicated that the abuse happened over a two-year period from October 2014 to April 27, 2016. The report says the victim was interviewed by the child protection team with the Department of Children and Families after the victim disclosed what happened. The child was then placed in protective custody. The child's siblings are being cared for by another relative, according to DCF. The couple has bonded out of jail but was ordered not to have any contact with the victim. News4Jax tried contacting the Haywoods, but no one was at home and they have not responded to requests for comment.

In a court of law, criminal defence lawyers represent people who are accused of crimes. Defendants in civil cases do not face the possibility of jail time, but they can be ordered by the court to pay damages to the plaintiff if he wins the case. During your degree, take criminal law courses. Unfortunately, with all the television ads promoting criminal justice programs, many would-be criminal attorneys mistakenly believe that this type of preliminary education is a must for a person interested in becoming a part of the criminal defence bar. Certification may require an additional exam or simply peer review by other attorneys who are certified in the speciality area. In addition to case evaluations, you will be required to develop legal arguments for cases that are being prosecuted. Like other lawyers, criminal lawyers attend law school, which is typically a three-year post-undergraduate program. Poor study habits will reflect negatively on your admission into a top-quality law school.
